WOW--definetely a frightening experience for a young child. The only class trip I ever had was to the Smithsonian and I could not go cause I had to have my tonsils removed. Ouch.
I remember the fire fighters visiting my school and telling us a terrible story of a girl who watched her parents burn to death in the family home because they were careless enough to wear bathrobes with floppy sleeves while cooking over the stove...to this day, I will not cook in a bathrobe, so those firemen did their job.
Where was the police station? Is it something else now?
Ah the trips we took. We went to DC and I remember insisting on wearing a pair of culottes I hadn't quite finished in 7th grade sewing class. sigh.
and the corner is now apartment buildings. That old station however was the stuff you see in gangster movies.
We had firefighters come to our school to teach us about not mixing ammonia and clorax and to tell our mommies that because it could kill them. We also had the sanitation department show the same terrifying film every year which included a 9 foot rat coming out of a hole the size of a dime.
